Sharing our perspective living with celiac disease
Quite simply, this reposted video is the reason why Gluten Free Therapeutics began and why Celi•Vites were created.
The short video created by Blue Chip Marketing Worldwide and posted on Celiac Central, features three members of the celiac community, as they share their struggle with the disease and hope for the future.
Gluten Free Therapeutics Vice President and research and development lead, Taylor Reynolds, echoes the voices in the video.
“Simple things can be burdensome,” she explains.
Taylor was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2005 and suffered anemia and osteopenia associated with the disease. Together with her mother, Leigh Reynolds, president and principal of Gluten Free Therapeutics, the duo realized the market was lacking high quality supplements and created Celi•Vites in hopes of to helping others dealing with celiac disease.
Along with the diagnosis came the loss of spontaneity, which was replaced instead by planning ahead for everything. “The days of going down the street for a lobster roll are over,” Taylor said with a laugh.
“Socially, it’s difficult,” she said.
When going out for business lunches, or dinner with friends, Taylor must take command, advocate for herself and try to make those she is with understand that it’s a medical issue, not her being difficult, needy or pushy.
There’s also a balance being assertive and polite when it comes to dining out.
In the video, one of the community members, Christine, talks about how difficult eating out and can be and Taylor echoes her sentiments.
“It’a a negotiation and trusting the chef,” Taylor said. She must throughly investigate and question if a restaurant is truly aware of the risk of cross-contamination during every aspect of preparation, from separate frying oil to separate cutting boards.
It’s also a matter of expense: Taylor and others with celiac disease must deal with the increase cost of gluten-free foods that are often three to four times more expensive.
Overall, Taylor was pleased with the video not only for the message but by accurately showing, by the selection of community members, that the disease is most commonly diagnosed in adulthood.
Most of all, their stories, like Taylor’s, are about the day-to-day inconveniences that those with celiac disease take in stride.
“Short of a cure, the most important thing is to spread awareness, this video does an excellent job of that,” Taylor said.
