Bone health through good nutrition
Bone health through good nutrition
Celi•Vites for Balanced Bone Health hit the market last week and we’re still celebrating.
Through social media and this blog, we have been talking a lot about how suffering from celiac disease is more than just removing gluten from your diet to heal your gut; it’s also can be crucial to add supplements into your daily routine to add vital nutrients missing from the gluten-free diet to heal your gut and stay healthy.
But what about going back to basics and talking about foods and can help protect and strengthen your bones, in addition to adding supplements like Celi•Vites? Eating the healthiest, nutrient-rich foods and taking supplements packs a one-two punch.
It can be shocking to learn that only 35% of American adults consume the recommended daily allowance of calcium they need and that 1 out of 2 women is affected by osteoporosis and osteopenia.
Let’s start off simple. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends foods rich in calcium, Vitamins D and K, magnesium and potassium for bone health.
Calcium builds strong bones and teeth and your calcium needs change as you age. If you don’t consume enough calcium through foods and supplements, you body will start to take the calcium it needs from your bones. Calcium is most commonly found in dairy products but is also found in beans, almonds, kale and fish.
Vitamin D helps your intestines absorb calcium and Vitamin K helps attract calcium to the bone. Turn to mushroom, eggs or fish like salmon or tuna for Vitamin D. For Vitamin K, consume dark leafy greens, fresh herbs, Brussels Sprouts, broccoli and chili powder. Vitamin K2 is not commonly found in the western diet. We are proud that Vitamin K2 is found in Celi•Vites for Balanced Bone Health.
Research also found that omega-3s, like those found in fish and flaxseed oils could be good for your bones.
Say yes to exercise too. Both cardiovascular and weight exercises strengthen and maintain bone mass.
Good bone health is also about what to avoid. Drinking too much alcohol, caffeine in coffee, tea or colas can cause a decrease in calcium absorption and lead to bone loss. Experts caution that consuming these drinks in moderation could have positive effect on bone health but research has not proven that definitively.
Also remember, even if you do eat foods rich in nutrients your body needs, for many celiac patients malabsorption is an issue. So consult with your doctor about adding a supplement like Celi•Vites for Balanced Bone Health.
But who wants to chew on just veggies or have a glass of milk to get your bone-healthy nutrients? Here is a delicious recipe to try that is filled with bone healthy foods. Get the recipe for Lamb Tangine with Prunes, Almonds, Sesame Seeds & Yogurt Sauce here
